ATDC Zimbabwe is seeking a Commodity Trader to join its operations department and lead the organisation's commodity trading function.

About the Role

This role carries strategic responsibility for ATDC Zimbabwe's entire commodity trading function, spanning domestic procurement, regional imports, and international exports across agricultural and industrial commodities. The successful candidate will ensure profitable trading operations, build key supplier and buyer partnerships, and align trading activities with trade finance, logistics, and agricultural development functions.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive commodity trading strategies covering domestic procurement, regional imports, and international exports.
  • Align trading strategies with ATDC Zimbabwe's strategic objectives, including export promotion, import substitution, agricultural value chain development, and regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
  • Monitor and analyse domestic, regional, and international commodity market trends, including supply/demand dynamics, price movements, and geopolitical developments, to identify trading opportunities aligned with ATDC's strategic mandate.
  • Collaborate with the Trade Finance Department to structure financing solutions for commodity transactions, including supplier finance, buyer finance, letters of credit, and supply chain finance, ensuring trading activities are financially viable.
  • Work closely with the Logistics & Shipping Department to ensure efficient procurement, transport, warehousing, and distribution of commodities.
  • Identify and develop export markets for Zimbabwean commodities, with a focus on AfCFTA member states and other strategic regions, and build relationships with international buyers, export agents, and market development agencies.
  • Lead efforts to onboard new suppliers and buyers to grow the trading portfolio, maintaining strong relationships with farmers, cooperatives, millers, processors, and exporters.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of risk management strategies, including hedging and other techniques, to mitigate market volatility, price fluctuations, and supply chain disruptions.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Economics, Finance, Commerce, or a related field; a postgraduate degree (MBA, MSc in Finance, Economics, or Agribusiness) is an added advantage.
  • Professional certification such as Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Commodity Trader (CCT), Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP), or Chartered Market Technician (CMT) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in commodities trading, procurement, or supply chain management, including at least 5 years in a leadership or senior trading role.
  • Experience in regional and international commodity trading, including cross-border trade and AfCFTA markets, is highly desirable.
  • Experience in agricultural commodities, value chain development, manufacturing, mining, and export markets is preferred, with a proven track record of delivering profitable trading results.

Skills and Competencies

  • Expert knowledge of commodity trading strategies and market dynamics for agricultural and industrial commodities.
  • Skilled in analysing market trends, price movements, supply/demand dynamics, and geopolitical developments.
  • Proficient in using trading platforms, ERP systems, and financial transaction systems.
  • Experienced in risk assessment, hedging strategies, and financial modelling.
  • In-depth knowledge of local, regional, and international trade regulations, including AfCFTA rules.
  • Skilled in negotiating complex contracts with favourable terms.
  • Competent in optimising supply chain processes for cost efficiency.
  • Knowledgeable in ESG principles and sustainable trading practices.
